Some common conditions treated by our neuro-ophthalmologists include:
  • Diplopia or double vision: It is an eye condition in which a person sees two different images of the same object. Monocular diplopia and binocular diplopia are the two types of double vision. It can be caused by eye dryness, head injury, side effects of certain medications, and alcohol intoxication. Corrective lenses, surgery, eye patches, and eye exercises are recommended depending upon the severity of the conditions.

  • Microvascular cranial nerve palsy: Microvascular cranial nerve palsy (MCNP) is a neurological disorder that affects the muscles that move the eyes through small blood vessels. It occurs more often in patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. This disorder causes a restriction of blood flow to the nerves between the brainstem and the muscles within the eye socket, as well as other nerves that affect visual function. It causes double vision, drooping eyeballs, enlarged pupils, pain in and around the eyes, blurred vision, and weak eye muscles. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure level and receiving appropriate treatment can aid in the management of the condition.

  • Optic neuritis: The optic nerve, which transfers visual data from the eye to the brain, is inflamed in this condition. The inflammation usually results in a temporary loss of eyesight. It causes eye pain, visual field loss, loss of colour vision, and vision loss in one eye. Corticosteroids and plasma exchange therapy are usually employed to reduce the inflammation and improve the eyes.

  • Ischemic optic neuropathy: A blockage of the optic nerve’s blood supply causes ischemic optic neuropathy. The doctor may recommend steroid pills to prevent the condition from developing in the other eye. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, and people over 50 years of age are commonly affected by this condition.

  • Optic atrophy: Optic atrophy is a disorder that damages the optic nerve that is responsible for transmitting impulses from the eye to the brain. It causes blurred vision, reduced sharpness in the eyes, and difficulties in peripheral vision. Optic atrophy has no permanent treatment. Treatment that begins before the development of optic atrophy can help save the vision.

  • Papilledema: Papilledema is an enlargement of the optic disc, or a portion of the optic nerve located within the eye. It is caused by intracranial hypertension within and around the central nervous system. The doctor may recommend medications to reduce swelling or perform a lumbar puncture to drain the fluid from the brain.
