Glaucoma Surgery

The Best Centre for Glaucoma Surgery in Bengaluru

Glaucoma surgery is a procedure that helps to stabilise eyesight and prevent future vision loss caused by glaucoma by lowering eye pressure. Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders in which the retinal nerve fibres are affected, causing gradual optic nerve loss and eventually blindness. Glaucoma is the world’s second most common cause of blindness. Eyedrops, laser treatments, and surgeries can all manage to slow down vision loss and preserve the eyesight.
Our ophthalmology department is well-equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic equipment and therapeutic methods for preventing and treating blindness caused by various glaucoma-related disorders. The glaucoma specialists of Jayadeva Nethralaya are highly qualified and experienced in handling long-term glaucoma ailments in adults and congenital glaucoma in infants and its associated complications. Our ophthalmologist initially conducts a tonometry test to determine the patient’s eye pressure. A visual field test may be performed to identify whether the patient has lost peripheral vision. Our senior consultants also offer expert consultations and follow-up and provide accurate diagnostic tests to identify the possible causes of glaucoma in order to create an effective treatment plan. Our multidisciplinary team works round the clock with other major specialties to deliver successful surgical outcomes to patients of all ages.

Common symptoms of Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma has no symptoms. Yearly examinations are important to detect the disease at an early stage. Angle-closure glaucoma may have the following symptoms:

  • Severe throbbing eye pain.
  • Redness of the eye.
  • Tearing, sensitivity to light, and eyelid spasms.
  • Decreased vision.
  • Seeing halos around lights.
  • Blurry or foggy vision.
  • Habitual rubbing and squinting of eyes.
  • Nausea and vomiting in sudden rise of pressure.

Surgical Treatment of Glaucoma

During glaucoma surgery, the surgeon drains fluid and releases pressure on the eye through a very small incision. To replace the drainage system of the eye, the surgeon may insert shunts or implants into the eye. The procedure takes about 45 minutes to an hour on average. Generally, patients do not experience any pain during or after an operation. However, some people experience mild, irritating symptoms, which are common after surgery. This discomfort is not serious enough to require the use of any pain medications. Antibiotics are given before, during, and after the surgery, and the surgeon follows strict sterile protocols to avoid infection.
Recovery time after glaucoma surgery varies per patient and per surgery, but most patients heal within 3 to 6 weeks. During the recovery time, doctors recommend that postoperative glaucoma patients avoid strenuous activity.
