Surgical Procedure for Laser Vision Correction
The surgery procedure usually takes 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes. Before the surgery begins, the ophthalmologist gives local anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eyes. It may cause a slight burning sensation in the eyes. To prevent patients from closing their eyelids, a speculum or clip is placed on the eyes to separate them. The surgeon will cut a flap in the cornea using an instrument called a microkeratome. The excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea by removing a precise amount of tissue from the inner cornea, which improves the vision. The flap is placed back immediately without stitches or sutures, allowing the cornea to heal without any scarring. After 24 to 48 hours of surgery, the vision will be completely recovered.
After the surgery, the patient will be given pain medications and eye drops to avoid irritation and keep them comfortable. The doctor also recommends wearing eye protection at night till it heals.
